Staghorn Fern
Staghorn ferns are epiphytic perennials or "air" plants. They are native to jungles in Africa, Australia and tropical regions of Asia. A staghorn fern does not need soil to grow, and will often be found high in a tree attached to the bark. Most staghorn ferns live in jungle areas, yet some are known to grow on rocks in desert areas.

A staghorn fern will thrive naturally in zone 10, or can be grown indoors. Most staghorn ferns are easy to care for, yet some require lots of care. Like other plants, this varies by species. A staghorn fern will get all of its nutrients from the air. Staghorn ferns require very specific conditions in order to thrive outside of their natural environment.

Most people will grow a staghorn fern outside, hanging it from a tree by a chain. This is a fairly simple process to do, which entails attaching the fern to a board. To do this, take some moss and allow it to get very wet. Then lay it onto a piece of hardwood, and place the staghorn fern on top of the moss. Attach the fern to the board securely, using fishing line. Then hang the board from a tree using strong hardware, as the fern will get very heavy.

Staghorn ferns, grown indoors must be kept out of the way of blowing hot or cold air. Grown outdoors, leaves and other debris will fall out of the tree into the fern. This will decompose and give the staghorn nutrients. Outdoor grown staghorn ferns should also be given a good amount of light, but no direct sunlight. This is because in their natural habitat of the jungle, there is generally a dense canopy overhead blocking all direct sunlight.
